Marine Petrolatum Tape | High-Conformability Splash Zone Anti-Corrosion Wrap
Product Overview & Substrate Isolation Barrier
The Marine Petrolatum Tape is an industrial-grade, non-hardening, and non-cracking protective wrap engineered for the long-life isolation, sealing, and waterproofing of structural metal surfaces. It serves as the primary chemical barrier within the heavy-duty PileCoat Splash and Tide Zone Protection System, protecting steel, concrete, and timber structures against oxygen, water, salts, acids, and caustics in aggressive marine environments.
Advanced Material Architecture
Unlike conventional liquid coatings that are prone to delamination and chemical cracking, this tape utilizes a composite matrix to maintain indefinite plasticity and complete stability under continuous substrate vibrations and structural movements. The system components comprise:
Synthetic Fabric Carrier: A non-woven, stitch-bonded synthetic fabric cloth that serves as the internal reinforcing matrix.
Petrolatum Compound: A thick, neutral petrolatum mass fully saturating and coating the fabric carrier, blended with active corrosion inhibitors and inert fillers.
Backing Film: A high-density polyethylene (HDPE) backing film that provides an integrated external shield during installation.
Technical Specifications & International Testing Standards
All physical, electrical, and chemical performance metrics are fully verified through standardized international laboratory testing methodologies:
Thickness: ≥ 1.30 mm avg. (Test Method: ASTM D1000)
Weight: ≥ 1.60 kg/m² avg. (Test Method: ASTM D1000)
Tensile Strength: 200 N / 50 mm (Test Method: ASTM D1000)
Elongation at Break: 10% avg. (Test Method: ASTM D1000)
Breakdown Voltage (55% overlap): ≥ 16 kV (Test Method: ASTM G8)
Resistance to Acids (10% HCl): Excellent (Test Method: ANSI/AWWA C 209-00)

Standard Product Configurations & Case Packaging
Each individual roll is manufactured to a standard length of 10 meters. Project engineers can select from the following standard widths based on specific piling or pipeline diameters:
50 mm Width: 0.50 m² per Roll | 24 Rolls per Case
75 mm Width: 0.75 m² per Roll | 18 Rolls per Case
100 mm Width: 1.0 m² per Roll | 12 Rolls per Case
150 mm Width: 1.5 m² per Roll | 8 Rolls per Case
200 mm Width: 2.0 m² per Roll | 6 Rolls per Case
300 mm Width: 3.0 m² per Roll | 4 Rolls per Case
Industrial Applications
Due to its high degree of conformability over irregular surface profiles and complex geometries, this petroleum-based wrap is widely deployed across key civil marine installations:
Marine Infrastructure: Long-term protection of bridge steel piles, wharf columns, harbor pilings, and jetty structures located in intertidal and splash zones.
Offshore Energy: External corrosion sealing for offshore oil platform riser pipes and exposed submersion-zone pipeline segments.
Subterranean Utilities: Waterproofing and atmospheric isolation for buried pipeline networks, valves, structural flanges, and underground connections.
Engineering Installation & Wrapping Protocol
To achieve the full parameter performance certified under ASTM/ANSI standards, field installation teams must strictly adhere to the following wrapping instructions:
Surface Treatment & Priming
The substrate must first be cleaned via hand or power tools to reach Grade SP2 or SP3, ensuring the surface is entirely free from loose rust, flaking coatings, marine growth, and scale. Prior to wrapping, apply Marine Petrolatum Paste as the recommended primer layer to maximize tape adhesion, displace residual surface water, and completely fill any corrosion pits exceeding 2 mm in depth.
Spiral Wrapping Mechanics
The tape must be spirally wrapped using a minimum 55% overlap across all applications. This specific structural layout guarantees a continuous double-layered anti-corrosion barrier across the entire surface profile.
Directional Orientation & Joint Splicing
Offshore Vertical Applications: Wrapping must begin at the designated low point and proceed upward to provide a robust "weatherboard" protective overlap.
Marine Vertical Applications: Wrapping must begin at the designated high point and proceed downward.
Roll Splicing: When terminating a roll, maintain a minimum 150 mm overlap when integrating the end of a new roll over the finished wrap.
Final Mechanical Sealing
At the completion of each roll, the operator must smooth the overlaps firmly by hand along the exact direction of the spiral path. This action ensures complete compound integration, removes air pockets, and seals the overlaps hermetically against environmental water ingress.
